Update on ILA and USMX Tentative Agreement – Strike Averted

We are pleased to share the latest developments regarding the potential labor disruption on the U.S. East and Gulf coasts.

The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) have reached a tentative agreement on a new six-year Master Contract. This agreement, announced on January 8, 2025, is subject to ratification by both the ILA’s Wage Scale Committee and the USMX membership. Importantly, this development has averted the strike previously anticipated to begin on January 15, 2025.

Key highlights of the agreement include:

  • Protection of current ILA jobs.
  • A framework for implementing technologies that create new job opportunities.
  • Measures to modernize and enhance the efficiency of East and Gulf coast ports.

While we remain optimistic, the agreement is pending ratification. Therefore, any preemptive measures communicated by carriers, such as surcharges or booking adjustments, may still apply until the final ratification is confirmed.

We recommend continuing to monitor your shipments and collaborating closely with your logistics partners to mitigate potential impacts. For clients who have taken precautions, such as early clearance of containers or adjustments to bookings, these efforts remain prudent given the situation’s fluid nature.
